Nevada’s first accredited breast center exceeds standards of quality care

Saint Mary’s Center for Cancer recently released its 2010 Annual Report, which highlights the accomplishments and research milestones the Center has made in the past two years. Included in the report are patient testimonials, national quality measures, cancer registry data and clinical trial information.

Since its opening in 2006, Saint Mary’s Center for Cancer has become a well-respected provider in the community, offering high-quality and compassionate care to cancer patients in northern Nevada. As noted by the hospital Cancer Registry, the Center identified 1,070 new cases in calendar year 2009 with a lifetime follow-up rate of 97 percent, far exceeding national requirements. Additionally, the most prevalent cancers seen at the Center include breast, lung, prostate, colon and bladder, encompassing 54 percent of all newly diagnosed cases.

“Saint Mary’s has a longstanding commitment to the northern Nevada community and we have worked hard over the last year to provide exceptional care to our patients,” said Patty Sredy, administrative director of oncology services at Saint Mary’s Center for Cancer. “Our No. 1 goal has always been to provide the best outcomes for patients and we follow an integrated, collaborative approach that ensures success.”

In Dec. 2010, Saint Mary’s Center for Cancer was named the first accredited breast center in Nevada by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers. Patients visiting an accredited breast center, like the one at Saint Mary’s, have access to the latest and most innovative resources in breast cancer treatment and technologies such as drug therapies, testing, screening and surgical techniques. The Center was also ranked No. 1 in the state by the National Cancer Database as surpassing quality measures for breast and colon cancers.

“Without the support and engagement of our physicians, we could not have accomplished all that we did. We have an outstanding team of doctors and clinic staff and we commend their efforts to make cancer care in our region at its best,” said Sredy.

Over the next year, the Center for Cancer will seek re-accreditation from the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer and will expand its programs and services for patients.
