Monday, June 27, 2011 – In order to help those with chronic diseases manage symptoms and live a healthier lifestyle, Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center offers a free, six-week Chronic Disease Self Management Program. The program, Healthy Aging: Up2Me, was created through a partnership with the Sanford Center for Aging at the University of Nevada, Reno. The next series of workshops for Healthy Aging: Up2Me begins Thursday, July 14 at 9 a.m. at the City of Reno Neil Road Recreation Center at 3925 Neil Road in Reno.
“This program is a life-changing resource for people in our community coping with chronic conditions,” said Susan Harris, MS, MA, coordinator of the Gerontology Academic program at the Sanford Center for Aging. “Sanford Center for Aging is proud to have such incredible partners like Saint Mary’s who make valuable programs like this possible.”
The Chronic Disease Self-Management program is offered to individuals 55 or older who have a chronic condition such as arthritis, heart or lung conditions, high blood pressure, cancer or other chronic diseases. The weekly classes will teach participants how to manage their diet and exercise, set personal goals and learn how to communicate health concerns with their physician. Additionally, all participants will receive a copy of the book Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions upon completion of the program.
The program is offered through a series of workshops taught by certified trainers and the next series will begin on Thursday, July 14 at 9 a.m. at the City of Reno Neil Road Recreation Center at 3925 Neil Road in Reno.
