Associated Students of the University of Nevada thank Nevada Legislature and Governor

Date:

SUBMITTED LETTER

On behalf of the Associated Students of the University of Nevada, I would like to thank the Nevada Legislature and Governor Sandoval for their bipartisan effort in passing the budget. I would also like to thank Chancellor Dan Klaich for his unwavering support of higher education and all Nevada students.

While we still face several million in cuts, which translates into tuition increases, reduction of departments, faculty and essential services, we are grateful our voices were heard. In particular, we would like convey our approval for the extension of the sunset taxes, and we would also like to express sincere appreciation for the continued funding of the Millennium Scholarship as proposed by Governor Sandoval and approved by the Legislature. Nevada students rely on this scholarship, and the state of Nevada relies on these students for a better future.

This budget battle is not over for Nevada’s students. This round of budget cuts only adds to previous years’ cuts, from which we are still recovering. In the future, I ask that legislators continue to support education and respect student input. Education has been and will always be a key component for a successful economy in Nevada.

“The school is the last expenditure upon which America should be willing to economize.”
-Franklin D. Roosevelt
