University of Phoenix Donates Books and Time for “Read to Kids Day” at Bennett Elementary School

Faculty and staff read to students and promote literacy

WHAT: University of Phoenix Northern Nevada Campus faculty and staff members have purchased 600 new books for Bennett Elementary School in Sun Valley, and are volunteering to read to all Pre-K – 6th grade students on Friday, May 13th.  Special guest, Amanda Sanchez from KOLO TV News will also be on hand to read to the students.

 

WHEN: Friday, May 13th 2011

Reading Rocks Agenda:

  • 8:00 – 9:00 a.m.: New books arranged for distribution in School Library
  • 9:30 – 9:45 a.m.: Assembly in school’s Multi-Purpose Room
  • 9:45 – 11:15 a.m.: Students arrive at School library to choose new books (one book per student)
  • *9:45 – 11:15 a.m.: Volunteers read to each classroom – Special guest reader,      TV Anchor Amanda Sanchez of KOLO’s Morning and Mid-day shows
  • 12:45 p.m.: Distribution of books to afternoon Pre-K classes

WHY: The “Read to Kids Day” event promotes literacy by encouraging Pre-K – 6th grade students to grow their reading skills. The event provides students with books and activities to demonstrate the benefits of reading and that learning is fun. University of Phoenix Northern Nevada campus is committed to volunteering time and efforts to further this invaluable cause for the students within the Reno community.

“Reading is the fundamental building block of lifelong learning,” said Francey Dennis, University of Phoenix Northern Nevada Campus College Chair.  “As with most skills, practicing reading improves comprehension and fluency. When a student has access to books at home, more opportunities for honing those skills becomes available.”
