Join the fun as Baker, Nev. hosts the Third Annual Snake Valley Festival June 17 to 19.
Baker, the gateway to the Snake Valley and Great Basin National Park, is a unique small town where ranching families live next door to artists and others who have left cities behind for rural life. The community of Snake Valley, from Baker and nearby Garrison, Utah, to Ibapah and Callao to the north, are showcasing the homespun recreational opportunities of the Snake Valley over the weekend.
Among the activities open to the public over the busy three days: An ice cream social, a wine tasting and a night sky program at the Great Basin National Park on Friday evening; a Pancake Breakfast, a Small Town Parade headed by Grand Marshall and two-time national champion bull rider Blue Stone, a giant water fight, and a barbeque dinner and live auction on Saturday; and on Sunday, a Pancake Breakfast and tours of Lehman Caves in the National Park (advanced reservations recommended: 775.234.7331 x242).
Also Sunday, and new this year, is the “Snake Valley Slither” 5K Run/Walk and 10K Run. This is a trail run near Sacramento Pass, overlooking the Snake Valley. Registration may be done on line at [email protected] or by contacting Race Chair Greg Moore at 775.234.7353.
Baker, Great Basin National Park and the Snake Valley offer some of the most spectacular night-sky viewing and natural alpine scenery in the continental United States.
Although it can be very warm during the day, nights and hikes in the National Park can be cool. From Las Vegas, follow U.S. 93 north and follow the signs to Great Basin National Park. From Salt Lake City, follow historic U.S. 50 – “The Loneliest Road in America” – west from Delta to Baker. From Reno, follow U.S. 50 East to Baker. Rooms are still available in the local motels and camping at the national park is open, first come first served. The communities of Baker and the Snake Valley have organized the festival to raise money for the Great Basin Water Network to pay for legal expenses and scientific studies to help protect water, plants, wildlife, and communities in Snake Valley.
