SUBMITTED RELEASE

washoedems-300x98-5808378-4796219The Democratic Party of Washoe County has lost a good friend with the passing of longtime civil rights activist Onie Cooper, April 6.

“The Rev. Onie Cooper was a great friend of our party and a leader in the fight for civil rights,” said Dorie Guy, WashoeDEMS chair. “This is very sad news.”

Cooper fought for the rights of all citizens in Washoe County for more than 40 years. His most well-known accomplishment was to have a stretch of U.S. Highway 395 through Reno named the Martin Luther King, Jr. Highway in honor of the civil rights leader.

“Onie was a true inspiration,” said Guy. “For many years, I’ve been impressed with his candor and caring nature.”
