SUBMITTED NEWS RELEASE

The University of Nevada School of Medicine’s Student Outreach Clinic recently received a $61,350 gift from the Nell J. Redfield Foundation to help with clinic operations.

Student Darren White spearheaded the effort to seek additional funding for the clinic which provides free monthly medical services to the area’s underserved populations while providing valuable clinical experience for medical students. Learning of the clinic’s educational mission and its value in providing medical services to the community in 2007, the Nell J. Redfield Foundation has been its most generous and consistent supporter.

“None of this would be possible without the funding we receive from the Redfield Foundation as it makes up the majority of our yearly budget,” White said. “We are, of course, extremely grateful to the Redfield Foundation for their generosity towards the Student Outreach Clinic and thankful to be able to have the opportunity to work with them to help these underserved populations.”

Student Outreach Clinics are held each month focusing on general health care, women’s health care and children’s health care services. Each clinic offers complete physical exams for school, sports or work and selected lab services at discounted fees.

Student Outreach Clinics are conducted under the direct supervision of licensed faculty physicians. The children’s clinic provides school physicals and physicals for the Head Start program, as well as immunizations. The women’s clinic provides free pap smears, pregnancy testing and sexually transmitted disease counseling. No appointments or insurance are necessary for care.

All clinics are held at University Health System’s Family Medicine Center, located on the University of Nevada, Reno campus just north of Mackay Stadium off of North Virginia Street.

Remaining clinics for this month include a children’s clinic scheduled for April 16 from 8 a.m. to noon and a general clinic scheduled for April 23 from 8 a.m. to noon.
