Community WellCheck- May 13 and 26

Saint Mary’s monthly Community WellCheck offers a wide variety of affordable health screenings and immunizations to help identify potential health risks.  All screenings are held from 7 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at Saint Mary’s Center for Health, at 645 N. Arlington, 3rd floor.  Cost varies.  To schedule an appointment call 770-7100.

Hands-on Grocery Store Tour only $10 – May 17

Saint Mary’s team of registered dietitians is offering a hands-on Grocery Store Tour on Tuesday, May 17 from 6-7 p.m. at Scolari’s at 6255 Sharlands Avenue East in Reno.  Tours will provide participants with budget-wise shopping tips that can be used to purchase healthy, nutritional foods.  The cost of the tour is only $10.  To register, call 770-7100.

Saint Mary’s Vascular Screening – May 25

Heart attack and stroke, caused by a build-up of fatty plaque in the walls of arteries, are leading causes of death and disability.  Risk factors for vascular disease include diabetes, smoking, high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol, family history and age.  For $120, lower your risk for vascular disease by getting screened on Wednesday, May 25.  Call 770-7600 for location and to schedule your appointment.

Breathe Easy Tobacco Cessation Program – Starts May 26

If you are interested in quitting smoking, Saint Mary’s Breathe Easy Tobacco Cessation program is for you.  Beginning on Thursday, May 26 and ending on June 23, a licensed tobacco specialist will provide participants with the tools they need to quit smoking.   Classes are held every Thursday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Saint Mary’s at Galena at 18653 Wedge Parkway, Reno, NV 89511.  The cost of the class is $95.  For more information or to register, call 770-7100.

Saint Mary’s Quality in Education Awards – Nominations close May 20

Do you know an outstanding WCSD teacher, employee or student?   If so, nominate them for a Saint Mary’s Quality in Education award.  Each winner receives a $250 check/savings bond and a $2,000 donation for each winner’s school.   For complete rules and to nominate someone, visit www.saintmarysqualityed.org now to nominate someone.   Nominations close on the 20th day of each month.

Volunteer Instructors Needed for Chronic Disease Program – Free training in June

If you or someone you know is interested in helping others with chronic health conditions, here’s a chance to become a trained leader in the Stanford School of Medicine’s Chronic Disease Self-Management Program.  This free training will teach leaders how to conduct the six-week chronic disease management workshop program, which is offered throughout the community, on an ongoing basis.  Though not mandatory, individuals with their own chronic conditions are especially encouraged to become leaders in this program. The leader training will be held June 9-10 and June 16-17 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Saint Mary’s.  Volunteers must attend all four training sessions.  For information or to register, contact Gary Aldax at 770.3038 or [email protected].

SUMMER IMMUNIZATIONS:

Tdap shots for entering 7th graders at Saint Mary’s Immunizations

All entering seventh graders are now required to get immunized against Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis (Tdap) before enrolling in a public or private school.  Saint Mary’s Immunizations is making it easy for your child to receive the immunization.  Shots cost $16 for the community and are free for Saint Mary’s HealthFirst or Health Choice members.  For more information or to schedule an appointment, call 770-7100.

Meningococcal Vaccinations for entering college freshman

All students planning to live in the college dormitories are required to get the Meningococcal vaccination.  Saint Mary’s Immunizations will offer the vaccination to all 2011 High School graduates for $138.  If you are a Saint Mary’s HealthFirst or Health Choice member, the vaccination is offered at no charge.  To schedule your appointment and get a head start on your child’s college paperwork, call 770-7100.

Saint Mary’s Travel Immunization program offers comprehensive, specialized travel health services.  Following the guidelines developed by the CDC, the program provides the appropriate immunizations specific to the countries you are visiting.  Remember vaccines and travel medications should begin at least one month prior to your departure to ensure full protection.  To schedule your appointment, call 770-7100.
