High-resolution PET/CT and Nuclear Medicine Camera bring innovative practices to Saint Mary’s

Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center, in partnership with its radiologists, announces the opening of a new Molecular Imaging Suite.  Designed to enhance patient experiences, the new suite will offer convenience, flexibility and the latest in imaging technology.  The new suite is an expansion of Saint Mary’s Outpatient Imaging Center located at the Center for Health, 645 N. Arlington Ave., Suite 250 in downtown Reno.

“Our patients rely on precise imaging technology to produce meaningful results and we are excited to offer the most advanced diagnostic tools,” said Dr. Mark McAllister, medical director of Radiology at Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center.  “The new PET/CT offers the highest resolution and shortest scan times available in northern Nevada.  Additionally, the suite will allow patients to access complete imaging and diagnostic services in one convenient location.”

Patients rely on accurate and timely imaging results, which is why Saint Mary’s has expanded its current Outpatient Imaging Center.  Included in the newly designed center are a Philips Gemini Positron emission tomography and computed tomography (PET/CT) and a Philips Forte Nuclear Medicine Camera.  Both technologies have significantly advanced medical diagnoses by providing high-resolution images in less time.

PET/CT scans combine two standard imaging procedures, positron emission tomography and computed tomography, into one scan that pinpoints the location of abnormal metabolic activity within the body.  This type of imaging is commonly used to detect malignancies, assess the effectiveness of a treatment plan, and can also be used to evaluate blood flow to heart muscle.  The Nuclear Medicine camera is a dual-head, variable angle camera, which supports the diagnosis of conditions related to oncology, cardiology, gastrointestinal disorders and endocrinology.

Saint Mary’s Outpatient Imaging works closely with Saint Mary’s Center for Cancer to offer a wide variety of diagnostic tools including mammography, ultrasound and MRI which are used for tumor detection.  Additionally, the Center for Cancer offers the latest in radiation therapy techniques including stereotactic radiosurgery through the use of CyberKnife, a non-invasive and highly-accurate approach to treating cancerous and benign tumors.

The newly designed Molecular Imaging Suite is now accepting new patients and is located at the Center for Health, 645 N. Arlington Ave., Suite 250.  Patients will have access to ample parking in the Ralston Street garage.  For more information or to make an appointment, call Saint Mary’s Radiology Scheduling at 770-3187 or visit www.saintmarysreno.org.
