SUBMITTED NEWS RELEASE
Truckee Meadows Tomorrow (TMT) has announced its Silver Star award winners for the first quarter of 2011. These individuals and organizations have measurably improved health and wellness in the Truckee Meadows by positively impacting the following quality of life indicators:
- Access to healthcare—Daniel Spogen, MD, Student Outreach Clinic medical director, University of Nevada School of Medicine, for providing much-needed healthcare for more than 3,200 local residents (98% uninsured), supported by volunteer students, clinicians and other community members.
- Wellness and preventative healthcare—Harrah’s Northern Nevada, Regional Wellness Center and Take Care Clinic wellness initiatives that included more than 750 flu shots, 250 blood donations, 1,052 dietician visits and 9,172 wellness center visits in 2010.
- Wellness and preventative healthcare—Kevin Quint, Join Together Northern Nevada executive director, for improving community collaborations among law enforcement, K-16 education and providers, resulting in increased access to substance abuse treatment opportunities and community prevention resources.
Recipients will be honored at TMT’s first quarter community forum on Thursday, March 31st at KNPB Channel 5 Public Broadcasting (1670 N. Virginia St. on the UNR campus) from 5-7 p.m. The public is invited to attend the forum (free to TMT members and $10 for non-members), which includes a panel discussing risky behaviors and how they impact our community’s health and wellness. Special thanks to Saint Mary’s, Northern Nevada Business Weekly and KNPB for helping sponsor this forum.
“It’s especially gratifying that individuals and organizations are continuing to make such a positive impact on quality of life here in the Truckee Meadows,” said TMT President Amber Martin-Jahn. “We are excited to honor them at TMT’s new quarterly forum series focused on the indicators, for the important work that they are doing to improve the community.”
This year, Silver Star nominations for the community’s 33 quality of life indicators will be accepted through the TMT Web site prior to each quarterly forum. Nominations will only be accepted for those indicators relevant to the forum topic. The next Silver Star nominations will open in late April.
