sandovallogo-300x91-1154367-7774276CARSON CITY–Gov. Brian Sandoval spent the morning reading to school children at Nevada Connections Academy and Jessie Beck Elementary School in Reno as part of Read Across America Day. Sandoval also signed a proclamation declaring March 2011 Nevada Reading Month.

“I have pledged my administration to improving the reading skills of third graders in our state and emphasizing the importance of reading for all our students, and today was a wonderful opportunity to take time to read to our students,” Sandoval said. “I enjoyed the chance to speak with students, hear about their favorite books and read to them.”

At Nevada Connections Academy, Sandoval read “Oh, the Places You’ll Go” to assembled students as well as to students in a virtual classroom. Connections Academy has been recognized as the state’s top ranked virtual school. The governor helped the students celebrate the birthday of Dr. Seuss and cut a cake in Seuss’ honor.

At Jessie Beck Elementary School, Sandoval read “Hooray for Diffendoofer Day” to third graders. Jessie Beck has the highest reading proficiency level in the third grade in the Washoe County School District. The Governor also spent time talking with students and discussing their favorite books.

Sponsored by the National Education Association, Read Across America Day is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of Dr. Seuss.
