Calling all farmers

Miles McEvoy, administrator of the USDA’s National Organic Program, will be the keynote speaker at the 2011 Organic Conference in Las Vegas, April 7-8.  McEvoy was the founding director of the Food Alliance, a program that blends sustainable farming practices and social welfare components into an eco-label program­.

 

“The conference will cover a variety of topics for all farmers organic or otherwise,” said conference organizer Marcia Litsinger.  “We’ll cover everything from urban farming to preparing the soil to marketing your produce.”

 

The conference will also cover other topics including beneficial insects, building soil and conservation methods.

 

Registration is $40 before March 15, $50 after March 15 or at the door.  Information on the conference can found online at the Friends of Nevada Organics Web Site at http://www.friendsofnvorganics.org/ or NRCS Nevada at http://www.nv.nrcs.usda.gov.  Lunch will be provided by Chef Michelle Palmer of Artisan Eats.

 

Other speakers include John and Sharon Davidson of Davidson’s Teas, Rick Lattin of Lattin Farms, the National Agriculture Information Service and the National Center for Appropriate Technology.

 

The conference is sponsored by Whole Foods, Davidson’s Tea, KT Beef, Artisan Eats, Friends of Nevada Organics, Nevada Dept. of Agriculture and USDA.
