RENO, Nev. – The University of Nevada, Reno is featuring the following events this week:

Remembering The Misfits, a screening and discussion, Sunday, Feb. 13
2 p.m.,Wells Fargo Auditorium in the Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center
A free screening and discussion by film critic Robin Holabird will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the release of The Misfits filmed in Reno, Dayton and the Pyramid Lake area. The star-studded film written by Arthur Miller, directed by John Huston, and starring Marilyn Monroe, Clark Gable, Eli Wallach and Thelma Ritter was filmed in northern Nevada, and holds strong Nevada themes. It was also Clark Gable’s and Marilyn Monroe’s last movie. Holabird will share fascinating behind-the-scenes stories about the iconic shoot.

Small Talk, Big Ideas: Conversations with University Authors, Wednesday, Feb. 16
Protest, Memory and Reenactmentwith Associate Professor Joseph DeLappe

7 p.m., Wells Fargo Auditorium, Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center
The second season of fascinating discussions with University of Nevada authors kicks off with Joseph DeLappe, professor of art. He will discuss art and activism as realized in both virtual and real territories. As a media artist, he has created a series of protests, interventions and reenactments within computer games and online communities. Working with electronic and new media since 1983, his work in online gaming performance, electromechanical installation and real-time web-based video transmission have been shown throughout the United States and abroad, including Wired.com, The New York Times, CNN, NPR, CBC, and The Sydney Morning Herald. Free parking is available on the top floor of the Brian J. Whalen Parking Garage.

Great Presentation: How Do We Learn to Be Sick? Wednesday, Feb. 16
A Case from the Neuropsychiatric Ward, Beijing, 1933

Hugh Shapiro, associate professor of history and Outstanding Undergraduate Research Faculty Mentor, presents his research on aspects of the body in Chinese medicine. Shapiro returned to campus a couple weeks ago after attending the State Dinner hosted by President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama with President Hu of China at the White House on Jan. 19.

Dean’s Future Scholars to pilot DFS EDGE, Friday, Feb. 18
6-8 p.m., William Raggio Building, Room 2032
Since its foundation in 2000, Dean’s Future Scholars has established a home-grown, sustainable educational model resulting in a 90 percent high school graduation rate. The program traditionally recruits students during their sixth-grade year and mentors them through high school and college. The Nevada System of Higher Education College Access Challenge Grant is sponsoring Dean’s Future Scholars to pilot DFS EDGE, an innovative effort to recruit new high school students into the program from Hug, North Valleys, and Washoe High Schools in northern Nevada. During the event, attendees will celebrate newly accepted Dean’s Future Scholars high school students, educate students, family, and participating high school administration on the new initiative, establish networks of academic and professional support, discuss DFS internship opportunities, be introduced to college student mentors and hear DFS testimonies.
