SUBMITTED NEWS RELEASE

United Way Worldwide and AT&T have awarded $25,000 to United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra (UWNNS) for a Family Engagement for High School Success initiative. This initiative has been designed to help parents and caregivers get more involved in their child’s education.

The initiative is a collaborative partnership of UWNNS with the Washoe County School District (WCSD) and the Education Alliance created in 2009. The initiative was designed to increase graduation rates for at-risk students in WCSD by empowering their families with the knowledge they need to support their children’s academic achievement.

“Creating lasting changes in education in our community is very important and this collaborative initiative allows us to help address low high school graduation rates by engaging parents,” said Karen Barsell, CEO and president of UWNNS. “Our local United Way is one of only seven grant recipients in the nation. We have received this grant because we’ve identified best practices for family engagement to boost high school graduation and are being recognized for our work in this area.”
