SUBMITTED NEWS RELEASE

Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center and Catholic Healthcare West (CHW) has awarded more than $153,000 in grants to local nonprofit organizations that target specific community health needs. The organizations who received funding include Access to Healthcare Network, American Lung Association, CARE Chest of Sierra Nevada and the Food Bank of Northern Nevada.

“Supporting the local community is something that is part of the Saint Mary’s culture and with the support of CHW, we are able to fund even more healthcare initiatives,” said Mike Uboldi, president and CEO of Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center. “Members of the community will greatly benefit from the programs these organizations create and we commend them for their efforts to improve the health of our region.”

The funds for these community grants are made available from CHW for distribution by its member hospitals throughout Nevada, California and Arizona. Including the most recent distribution of grants, CHW and Saint Mary’s have granted a total of $565,517 to the Reno/Sparks community over the past four years. Funding for these grants is in no way related to charitable contributions made to Saint Mary’s Foundation.

In order to address the current healthcare needs of the community, Saint Mary’s has identified key priorities to focus all of the organization’s community benefit activities. These include: improving access to healthcare, preventing and/or managing chronic illness, improving birth outcomes, improving access to oral health services, reducing infectious disease, accessing and/or utilizing immunizations, improving nutritional habits and physical activity levels of populations at risk for developing lifestyle-related illness.
