reidjobcorps-600x399-2790069-3031766WASHINGTON, D.C.—Sen. Harry Reid was honored this week with an award from students and staff from the Sierra Nevada Job Corps Program, located outside Reno, for his long-time support of the nation’s largest residential, education and job training program for at-risk youth ages 16 through 24.

“The only way for Nevada’s students to compete in a 21st century economy is to invest in education and job training programs,” said Reid. “I look forward to continuing to work closely with Sierra Nevada Jobs Corps, which is playing an integral role in strengthening our economy and preparing our workforce for the jobs to come.”

“Senator Reid has been instrumental to ensuring that students like Lucas and Leila Harring can build their lives,” said Job Corps Sierra Nevada Business and Community Liaison Heylse Turner. “For them to be able to get the extra education and training they need to be self-sufficient, we really couldn’t do it without him.”

Reid was the graduation speaker at the Sierra Nevada Jobs Corps Center last summer. Since its creation in 1964, Job Corps has provided more than 2 million disadvantaged young people with the academic and vocational training to secure employment or further their education. The Sierra Nevada campus provides training in auto repair, carpentry, electrical, hospitality and culinary arts, serves nearly 600 students and is among the largest Job Corps sites in the nation.
