In a remarkable interfaith gesture, clergy belonging to different religions and denominations are holding a reception for Father Stephen Karcher, new pastor of the Saint Anthony Greek Orthodox Church in Reno, said to be the only Orthodox Christian church in Northern Nevada and adjoining California.

The reception will be held at India Kabab & Curry Restaurant, 1091 South Virginia St. (at Vassar Street in Reno) on Monday, March 14, at 3 p.m. Sparks Mayor Geno Martini will preside. The public is welcome to participate at a cost of $5 each to the restaurant for snacks and chai tea. An RSVP to Rajan Zed at [email protected] would be appreciated.

Born in Santa Monica, Calif., Karcher graduated from University of California Irvine and Pastoral Theology School of Aristotle University in Greece, and was ordained in the ancient Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. Before coming to Reno, he served in St. George Church in San Francisco and St. Paul’s Greek Orthodox Church in Irvine, Calif.

Saint Anthony Greek Orthodox Church of Reno was founded in 1962 and is famous for its annual Greek Festival. Orthodox Christians have been in Northern Nevada since the late 1800s, coming to work in the copper mining industry. There are approximately 300 million Orthodox Christians in the world.
