Electric cars are shockingly fast, sleek, sexy and available, but are Nevadans ready?
While widespread unrest in the Middle East rocks financial markets and growing gasoline price anxiety captures national headlines, electric vehicles (EV) are quietly rolling into new car showrooms nationwide.
But is the public ready for electric cars? What do they look like? How fast and how far will an EV go? How much do they cost and what’s the cost of operation? How and where can an EV be charged? What’s “range anxiety” mean?
Those questions and more will be answered next Sunday, February 27, at Reno’s landmark National Automobile Museum (The Harrah Collection) when the Electric Auto Association of Northern Nevada and AAA Nevada presents the EV display and interactive panel discussion: Plug into Electric Cars!
So let’s get ready as 2011 marks the return of the EV—and this time they’re here to stay!
“The future is brighter than ever for electric vehicles,” said Michael Geeser of AAA Nevada. “AAA is proud to be an educator and advocate for new vehicle technology that will give consumers more choices while protecting our environment.”
“Exactly,” added Bob Tregilus of the EAANN and panel moderator for Sunday’s event, “EVs are not about replacing internal combustion vehicles (ICEs) as so many people fear, rather, EVs are about displacing fossil-fuel consumption for everyday commuters; that will save them both money and help improve our environment.”
Plug into Electric Cars! is an educational event featuring both Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV) as well as pure Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV). On display at Plug into Electric Cars! will be a:
- 2011 Chevy Volt (PHEV)
- 2010 Tesla Motors Roadster (BEV)
- 2007 Converted Plug-in Toyota Prius (PHEV)
- 1914 Detroit Electric Gentleman’s Roadster (BEV)
Activities will include a social with light refreshments, a panel discussion featuring local EV experts from NV Energy, EAANN, AAA Nevada, and Nissan of Reno—and lots of time for the public to interact with the EVs as well as ask questions of our expert panel.
This is not a sales event, and is intended solely as a community introduction to emerging electric drive transportation technology as well as its environmental and economic attributes.
