SUBMITTED STATEMENT FROM WASHOE COUNTY REPUBLICAN PARTY AND DEMOCRATIC PARTY OF WASHOE COUNTY

We join today, as the elected leaders of the two major political parties in Washoe County, in expressing our support and best wishes to the victims of today’s tragic shootings in Tucson, their families and their community.

We pray for a full and speedy recovery for Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and the other individuals wounded and currently in hospital. We pray also for those who have been killed and their families.

We join with one voice to strongly condemn the use of violence in any form against any public official. While we do not yet know the motivation of the young man accused of this abhorrent act, we want to state unequivocally that violence has no place in our national political dialogue and it can only serve to weaken our great nation.

Our republic depends on a free exchange of ideas and views between our public servants and the people they serve. We should be thankful for the type of public listening session Congresswoman Giffords was conducting when shot this morning. We need our elected officials to feel safe to reach out to the public at all times.

We encourage all citizens of Washoe County to join with us in sending our best wishes to all those individuals affected by today’s tragedy, and in condemning this senseless violence.
