BLM NEWS RELEASE
CARSON CITY – The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Carson City District-Stillwater Field Office, is seeking tips and information on individuals involved in the illegal cutting of a landmark cottonwood tree, locally known as the “Shoe Tree,” on the north side of U.S. Highway 50 near Middlegate, Nevada.  The cutting of the tree is reported to have occurred on or about December 30.

“The tree is located on BLM public land within the U.S. Highway 50 right-of-way held by the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT),” said Terri Knutson, BLM Stillwater Field Office Manager.  “Our law enforcement officers are taking the lead on the investigation in cooperation with the Churchill County Sheriff’s Office.  We would appreciate tips and information that people have to be directed to our BLM-Nevada Record-A-Crime Hotline at 1-800-521-6501.”

BLM and NDOT will leave the old cottonwood tree in place for now because it is valuable wildlife habitat even in its downed state.
