WashoeDEMS celebrate DADT repeal and grieve the DREAM

SUBMITTED NEWS RELEASE

washoedems-300x98-5582658-6012909The Democratic Party of Washoe County (WashoeDEMS) applauds the U.S. Senate’s actions Saturday in repealing the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” military policy but is deeply disappointed in the Senate’s turndown of the DREAM act, which would have given young illegal immigrants a chance to gain legal status.

“We are very appreciative of Sen. Harry Reid’s leadership and the eight Republican Senators, including Sen. John Ensign, who reached across the aisle to repeal DADT, enabling gay men and women to openly serve our country,” said Chip Evans, WashoeDEMS Chair.

“We are deeply disappointed, however, in the Senate blockage of the DREAM Act, which now prevents immigrant youth from an opportunity toward citizenship by attending college or serving in the military,” said Shaun Gray, WashoeDEMS Executive Director.

The WashoeDEMS are passionately supportive of Sen. Harry Reid’s efforts toward comprehensive immigation reform and will continue to make phone calls, knock on doors and sign petitions in support of a resolution of this issue.

Members of the community who wish to join the WashoeDEMS in these efforts may call 323-8683 or log on to .
