As New Year’s Eve approaches, the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office asks the community to celebrate responsibly so that a festivity does not turn into a tragedy due to a thoughtless or irresponsible act.
Discharging a firearm into the air is illegal, as well as being dangerous and potentially deadly. A person discharging a firearm in a congested area, across county road/highways, or near an occupied dwelling can be issued a citation or booked into the Washoe County Detention Facility. Setting off fireworks is also illegal in Washoe County. A person in possession of fireworks can be issued a citation or booked into the Washoe County Detention Facility.
These unlawful acts are misdemeanor offenses and could land a person in jail for six-months and/or up to a $1000 fine.
A projectile that goes up must come down. Although the intention might be to celebrate, somebody’s celebration could end up being deadly and/or causing serious bodily harm to another person. Also, a projectile could cause damage to another person’s property. Fireworks could lead to possible brush/structure fire as well as personal injury. Illegal acts which destroy personal property, harm or kill others may possibly lead to more serious charges and/or civil penalties.
These acts can be reported to the Sheriff’s Office by calling 832-WCSO (9276) or call 911 in case of an immediate emergency. Happy New Years
