Sandoval announces final cabinet choices before taking office

sandovaltransition-300x62-5812821-6283943Gov.-elect Brian Sandoval today announced his plans to appoint four veteran administrators to positions within Sandoval’s administration. When he takes office, Sandoval will name the following administrators as acting directors of their respective departments:

Greg Cox, Corrections
Dr. Michael Fischer, Cultural Affairs
David Gustafson, Information Technology
Chris Perry, Public Safety

“Each of these administrators has extensive experience in their field, and I will look to their leadership for the upcoming session of the Nevada Legislature,” Sandoval said. “Greg, Mike, David and Chris have my full support to make the kind of changes needed in these important departments.”

James G. “Greg” Cox is currently Deputy Director, Nevada Department of Corrections, based in Las Vegas. He previously served as warden of the High Desert State Prison and the Southern Desert Correctional Center. Prior to moving to Nevada in 2003, Cox was a senior public service administrator at Pontiac Correctional Center in Illinois and held several other leadership position in the corrections field in Illinois. Cox has attended numerous national trainings, including several from the National Institute of Corrections.

Currently the director of the Department of Cultural Affairs, Dr. Michael E. Fischer practiced dentistry in Gardnerville for 31 years. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Western Folklife Center and the Douglas County Historical Society. He spent eight years as a Douglas County Commissioner.

David Gustafson is currently serving as deputy director of the Department of Information Technology. He received a BSBA degree in Management Information Systems from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and has been a Nevada resident for over 15 years. He has held numerous IT leadership roles over his career and is a certified project manager with the Project Management Institute. Prior to joining the state government, he worked in the private sector as the director of IT for EMPLOYERS and has worked at Microsoft Licensing and Accenture consulting.

Chris Perry, who began his law enforcement career in 1982 as a trooper with the Nevada Highway Patrol in Las Vegas, is currently serving as deputy director of the Department of Public Safety. In 2005, Perry was appointed chief of the Department of Public Safety Training Division. In 2006, he was appointed chief of the Highway Patrol Division. Perry holds a bachelor of science degree from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and extensive advanced law enforcement training, including certifications from Northwestern University, the US Department of Justice and Nevada POST.
