Set manageable goals to improve your health and your life
To help seniors who have a chronic disease live a healthier lifestyle, Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center in partnership with the Sanford Center for Aging at the University of Nevada will offer a new program. The free six-week, Healthy Aging: Up2Me chronic disease self management program will be offered weekly starting on Thursday, Jan. 13 from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
“Chronic disease impacts many people in our community and, with greater support mechanisms and resources, those affected could live healthier lives,” said Susan Harris, MS, MA, coordinator of the Gerontology Academic program at the Sanford Center for Aging. “This six-week program will help guide participants in setting goals while they work with a certified trainer to manage their conditions.”
If you are 55 or older and have a chronic condition, such as arthritis, heart or lung conditions, high blood pressure, cancer or other chronic conditions, this free, six-week class series can help you cope with your condition. During the program, you will learn how to manage your chronic disease through exercise techniques, communication skills, setting personal goals, learning about community resources, and how to optimize your relationship with your physician. Additionally, all participants will receive a copy of the book, Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions upon completion the program. All classes are taught by certified trainers.
The six week program will begin on Thursday, Jan. 13 and end on Feb. 17. All classes will run from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. and will take place at Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center, 235 W. Sixth Street, Reno. Registration is required and space is limited. Additional workshops will be held each month at various locations around the community.
