ELKO — Relax and have fun with friends and family at the Old Time Family Fun Dance at the California Trail Center on Saturday, Nov. 13 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The event is free, and singles, couples, and families are all welcome. No dancing skills are necessary. Dance caller Rob Snow will teach all the necessary steps as musical selections from the 1800s performed live by South Wind will put dancers in the pioneer spirit.
In spite of the hardships of the overland migration, emigrants did make time for fun. Flutes and fiddles were common on the California Trail and dances were a popular recreational activity after long, dull days of walking alongside wagons. Music and dance were an important way of getting joining with others to share memories of home and forget the worries of the journey, at least for a little while. So, gather the kids and join your friends and neighbors for a rollicking evening of music and dance.
The California Trail Center is operated by the Bureau of Land Management, and is located eight miles west of Elko at Hunter exit 292. The Center is currently closed to the public, however the staff and facilities, including a room for meetings and events, are available for scheduled school groups and private tours. For more information, please contact Trail Center staff at 775-738-1849.
