Renown leaders honored wth healthcare hero awards

The Nevada Business Journal presented Jim Miller, Renown Health’s president and CEO, with the Administrator award and Linda Ferris, Ph.D., Renown Health’s vice president of cancer services, with the Innovation award during the publication’s 5th annual Healthcare Heroes awards program in Reno Tuesday evening.

Each year, the magazine recognizes 10 individuals who have made significant contributions to healthcare in northern Nevada. Another 10 individuals received parallel honors in southern Nevada last week.

Jim Miller was honored for his passion and dedication in leading employees to providing premiere quality  and service to the patients they serve. He was also recognized for his efforts to establish the Renown Children’s Hospital, new technological additions to the institutes for heart and cancer and the region’s only Level II Trauma Center.

Ferris was honored for her efforts in research, innovation and achievement that have significantly improved cancer and heart care in northern Nevada. Some of these efforts include bringing advanced technological treatment options like da Vinci Surgical Robotics, TomoTherapy, the region’s first Chest Pain Center and the Renown Institute for Robotic Surgery.

Other award recipients include “Care Provider” – Debbie Robinson, Washoe County CARES/SART Program; “Educator” – Dr. Ole Thienhaus, University of Nevada, School of Medicine ; “Community Partner” – Dick Barnard, Barnard Vogler & Co.; “Humanitarian” – Dr. Wesley Hall, Sr., Physician; “Entrepreneur” – Emilio Parga, The Solace Tree; “Non-Profit” – Bill Welch, Nevada Hospital Association; “Technology/Research” – Dr. Jonathan Tay, Reno Cyberknife and “Lifetime Achievement” – Dr. John McDonald, University of Nevada, Reno.

The Healthcare Heroes event is sponsored by Nevada Business Magazine and Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield. All proceeds benefit students pursuing careers in healthcare education at the University of Nevada Las Vegas, the University of Nevada School of Medicine and Touro University.
