SUBMITTED RELEASE
A new online resource, Sandovalfactcheck.com, will deliver the facts about Brian Sandoval’s real plans for education to voters in the 2010 gubernatorial race.
Last week, Sandoval released an education “plan” clearly designed to make Nevadans forget that he has already proposed to lay off more than 5,000 teachers in our state and to make more massive cuts to elementary school class-size reduction programs.
Sandovalfactcheck.com will provide unfiltered facts about Sandoval’s policy proposals that would have an immediate and long-lasting negative impact on our schools, our children, our teachers, and our economy.
Sandoval’s pink slip agenda for education in Nevada would only lead to even bigger class sizes and fewer opportunities for students, further pushing our schools down the wrong path. Nevada already ranks dead last in the nation in graduation rates, with less than 42 percent of students completing high school.
Now Sandoval wants to make even more devastating cuts, including:
— Slashing teacher salaries by 20 percent or lay off more than 5,000 teachers. That’s 1-in-5 Nevada teachers.
— Raiding $110 million from class-size reduction funds, particularly targeting 7- and 8-year-olds.
— Pushing a voucher program that would drain millions from our public schools and wouldn’t even begin to cover tuition for the average private school.
— Cutting 12 percent from faculty and staff at our colleges and universities–that’s more than 750 professor and staff jobs lost.
Sandoval has begun what will be a campaign-long pattern of ducking debates, dodging interviews, flip-flopping on stances and pushing to do further harm to Nevada’s struggling education system. He does not understand that we cannot draw new business until we have a strong education system to train an educated workforce and provide opportunities for the families of workers.
Sandovalfactcheck.com will be updated regularly during the campaign.
Rory Reid introduced innovative plans to reform education in our state, rebuild our economy and overhaul our state’s ethics rules over the past eight months–and did so without being pushed for answers.
Reid is the only candidate for governor to offer solutions for today and a plan for Nevada’s future success–supporting strong schools for a stronger economy. For more information about his campaign or to download his plans, visit Rory2010.com.
