Sacramento rallied for three runs in the top of the ninth inning Sunday night, turning a late deficit into a 10-8 victory over the Reno Aces in front of 9,271 fans at Aces Ballpark, a new Aces Ballpark record.
Sacramento scored seven runs over the game’s final three innings, digging out of a five-run hole to capture the series-opening victory. Ryan Roberts put the Aces ahead in the first with a three-run homer, his sixth of the season, after Drew Macias drove in a run with an RBI-single. The Aces would extend the lead to 8-3 in the fourth, but the River Cats rallied late for the win.
Luis Ayala (1-8) suffered the loss for Reno, surrendering three runs on three hits in 1.1 innings of work. Aces starter Kevin Mulvey labored early—allowing three first-inning runs—but settled in after that and ultimately took a no decision. Mulvey worked 5.0 innings, giving up three runs on five hits. He walked five and struck out three in a 94-pitch effort.
Sacramento starter Travis Banwart also did not figure into the decision, despite allowing eight runs on nine hits over 3.1 frames. The win went to Fernando Hernandez (1-6), who worked a scoreless frame in relief. Ross Wolf came on in the ninth and slammed the door for his third save.
Roberts finished with a three-hit, four-RBI night to pace Reno at the plate. Doug Deeds added three hits—including his league-leading 28th and 29th doubles—and scored twice for the Aces. John Hester chipped in with a double, a triple and two RBIs.
Sunday’s game marked the eighth sellout in Aces Ballpark history. The attendance mark topped the previous high of 9,263, which was set on Aug. 21 of last season.
The Aces and River Cats continue the series on Monday afternoon from Aces Ballpark. RHP Cesar Valdez (2-3, 3.89 ERA) takes the ball for Reno, and RHP Boof Bonser (0-0, No ERA) counters for Sacramento. First pitch is set for 1:05 p.m., and 2,500 fans will receive a three-piece Aces barbecue tool set presented by KRNV.
