Anita Watson to portray pioneer midwife and healer during California Trail Days

ELKO — Chautauqua performer Anita Watson will portray pioneer midwife and healer Mary Oxborrow during the seventh annual California Trail Days, which will run from May 28-29 at the Elko California Trail Center.  Mormon pioneers, Oxborrow and her husband homesteaded in Utah and Nevada during the late 1800s.  During her midwife and healer career she he delivered more than 200 babies.  Watson’s presentation is made possible by a grant from Nevada Humanities.  Admission to all California Trail Days events is free.

The event will kick off the opening of the Elko California Trail Center for the summer months of 2010.  Summer hours for the Center will be 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Wednesdays through Sundays, through Labor Day.  Those who want to know more about frontier medical practices can also be among the first to see the new exhibit “Strong Medicine,” which will be officially unveiled during California Trail Days.

California Trail Days will also feature actor Denny Miller, who portrayed Duke Shannon on the Wagon Train television series.  Miller will host a program featuring clips from Wagon Train, followed by a question and answer session.  Miller has enjoyed a long and successful career in film and television, appearing in such popular series as Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, Dallas, and Charlie’s Angels.  A full schedule of California Trail Days presenters and events is available online at:

California Trail Days visitors can pan for gold, hear fiddle music, learn about Shoshone culture, and see black powder demonstrations.  Young and old can visit an emigrant camp, try on period costumes, see live oxen, and go for a wagon ride.  Archaeologists will be on hand to discuss their findings along the trail, and numerous other programs will be presented.

Operated by the Bureau of Land Management Elko District Office, the Elko California Trail Center is located just off Interstate 80, eight miles west of Elko at Hunter Exit 292.  For more information about California Trail Days or the Elko California Trail Center please call 775-738-1849.
