SUBMITTED NEWS RELEASE

RENO, Nev. — Volunteers are needed to help cleanup open space areas and pull invasive weeds during the 5th annual Great Truckee Meadows Community Cleanup on Saturday, May 8 from 8:30am-noon.

The Great Truckee Meadows Community Cleanup is part of a long-term, community-based effort to consolidate resources and provide greater stewardship of the region’s natural resources.

Last year, volunteers removed over 85 tons of garbage from a variety of outdoor recreation areas throughout the Truckee Meadows. Locations for this year’s clean up include areas surrounding Golden Valley, Sun Valley, Hidden Valley, Peavine Mountain, Sparks, south Reno, and Eagle Canyon. This year the cleanup has been expanded to include weed pull sites along the Truckee River.

Volunteers may sign-up and choose a location by visiting the Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful website at www.ktmb.org.

“Working together, we can improve our quality of life through education, the proper disposal of solid waste, and the preservation of some of our favorite outdoor recreational areas,” says Christi Cakiroglu Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful Executive Director.

Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful is working with Washoe County, the cities of Sparks and Reno, Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Forest Service, Reno-Sparks Indian Colony, Waste Management, and others to identify the most pertinent sites and coordinate volunteers. The cleanup is sponsored by generous businesses and organizations including: the Truckee River Fund, Sun Valley General Improvement District, Hobey’s Casino/Restaurant, American Auto Wreckers, Bridgestone-Firestone, Tires Plus, CleanHarbors Environmental, Green Genius, Fresh Energy Bakery, Save-Mart Supermarkets, Pepsi Wilkes Radio, Nevada EcoNet, Nevada Land Conservancy, Truckee Meadows Weed Coordinating Group, Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Northern Nevada, Nevada Blue, Reno-Sparks Chamber of Commerce, Sparks Chamber of Commerce, and New Belgium Brewery.

Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful (KTMB) is a private 501(C)3 nonprofit celebrating 20 years of creating a cleaner, more beautiful region through education and active community involvement. For more information, call (775) 851-5185 or visit www.ktmb.org. KTMB is supported by individual and community contributions.
