Gillespie’s bat not enough as Aces fall to Salt Lake, 6-4

aces-300x233-3214008-5354261Cole Gillespie went two-for-three with a triple and a single, but the Aces couldn’t mount a rally against the Bees bullpen in a 6-4 loss to Salt Lake Tuesday night at Aces Ballpark.

Trailing 5-2 in the sixth inning, Reno put together a rally that started with three-straight walks, but could muster just a pair of sacrifice flies in the inning to cut the deficit to 5-4. Salt Lake added an insurance run in the seventh, and that was all the Bees’ bullpen would need, as three Salt Lake relievers would hold the Aces hitless through the final 3.2 innings of the game.

Kevin Mulvey started for Reno, tossing three innings and allowing just two runs (one earned), and Jose Marte (0-1) took the loss after allowing three earned runs in two innings of relief.

Trevor Reckling (1-0) started and earned the win for Salt Lake, while three Bees relievers combined to allow just two walks and no hits over the final 3.2 innings. Rafael Rodriguez threw a perfect ninth inning to earn his second save of the season.

Reno and Salt Lake continue the series tomorrow afternoon, with RHP Cesar Valdez (0-0, 0.00 ERA) set to face Salt Lake RHP Sean O’Sullivan (0-1, 9.00 ERA). First pitch is set for 1:05 p.m. at Aces Ballpark.
