Carson City, Nev. The Nevada Arts Council presents “Honest Horses: A Portrait of the Mustang in the Great Basin” on exhibit through May 11, 2010. The exhibit presents an uncommon view of the significance of the wild horse to the Great Basin and is part of the Arts Council’s Office eXhibition Series (OXS).
Wild horses conjure up an image of mythical proportions. Not only are they a reminder of our country’s emergence as a nation, their role in the evolution and history of the American West and their impact on Native American culture is profound.
Curated by Paula Morin for the Nevada Arts Council, “Honest Horses” exhibit is part of Nevada Touring Initiative, supported by the National Endowment for the Arts.
The original photographs and narratives were made during 1999-2001, during which time Paula Morin photographed wild horse herds in their natural surroundings and recorded her discussions with people whose lives are most intimately connected with them. A synergy of image and word portrays the intricate relationship of wild horses to the culture and landscape of the Great Basin — from yesteryear to the present.
The exhibition contains 21giclee prints made from Morin’s original hand painted black and white photographs.
The OXS gallery is located in Nevada Arts Council office at 716 N. Carson Street (intersection of Washington Street), Suite A, in Carson City and is open 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Call 775-687-6680 for details.
A program of the Nevada Arts Council, the Nevada Touring Initiative supports the work of artists and increases access to cultural events and experiences at the local level, particularly in communities that have typically been underserved.
The Nevada Arts Council was founded in 1967 as a state agency charged with developing and promoting the arts in Nevada.
