EXHIBITION OPENINGS

Views From China: Yang Yongliang and The Modern Metropolis
April 3—September 12, 2010
Although they may appear to be dreamlike paintings, Yang Yongliang’s works are cleverly crafted from digital photographs of China’s bustling cities, and then manipulated into haunting imaginary landscapes that critique the country’s rapidly changing built environment and the impact of technological progress. This exhibition is the artist’s first solo museum exhibition in the US.

Bluesman Al Blake Performs

Join the Museum in welcoming the celebrated bluesman for a special performance in association with A Survey of Gee’s Bend Quilts. Blake’s encyclopedic knowledge of the Blues and its players makes him one of the most serious students of this uniquely American genre and the creator of some of the deepest and purest Blues of the post-modern era. $12/$10 Museum Members

Easter Brunch at the Museum

Sunday, April 4 / Seatings at 10 am, 10:30am, 11 am, and 11:30 am, and Noon.

ART BITE Dr. Byron Vreeland on Amphora Pottery

One of the foremost connoisseurs of Amphora Pottery, collector Dr. Byron Vreeland leads guests through the history and tales of the intricate works in this important and rare collection. 

TALK Artist Lucy Raven on China Town

Thursday, April 15 / 6 pm

Artist Lucy Raven discusses her work, the trail she followed, and the complex intertwining of the US and China in an increasingly globalized world. From an open pit mine in East Ely, NV to the Yangtze River in China, Raven shot more than 70,000 photographs to create China Town, now on display in the C A+E Gallery. $5/$4 Museum Members. 

ART BITE Hunting: Environmental History, Native American Traditions, and Trophy Hunter

Friday, April 16 / noon

Ben Aleck of the Pyramid Lake Museum and Visitors’ Center, environmental historian Jen Huntleysmith, and artist Bryan Christiansen lead an intimate roundtable discussion of hunting in contemporary American life. 

Reading and Book Signing: Steven Nightingale’s The Light in Them is Permanent

Thursday, April 22 / 5.30 pm

Celebrate National Poetry Month with the Museum and Black Rock Press by welcoming poet Steven Nightingale for a reading and discussion of his newest collection of poetry, followed by a reception and book signing. Copies of the book will be available for purchase in the Museum Store. Free tickets available on a first-come, first-served basis at www.nevadaart.org/tickets and at the Admissions desk.

hands/ON! SUNDAY FAMILY PROGRAM – Spring Watercolors

Kids will be inspired by the fresh colors of spring as they create watercolors featuring birds, gardens and baby animals. One-hour sessions beginning at noon, 1 pm, 2 pm and 3 pm. Bring the entire family for this free, fun program featuring hands-on art projects and gallery activities for all ages. Admission to hands/ON! is free.
