Nevada César Chávez Day VIII happens on Wednesday, March 31, 2010, at Circus Circus Hotel-Casino in Reno. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., dinner at 7:00 p.m.
This year, the event inaugurates the César Chávez Silver State Public Service Awards. Nominations are open for labor organizer, employer, humanitarian and union project of the year. A special hall of fame award will also be presented.
As always, members of César Chávez’s immediate family have been invited in addition to federal, state and local officials.
The event’s 2010 community service beneficiary is Sierra Nevada Community Access Television (sncat.org). The Nevada César Chávez Committee is helping the non-profit multi-media operation raise funds toward a $40,000 matching tax-deductible foundation grant. The campaign will be highlighted on Chávez Day by a student-level TV public service announcement production competition.
Nevada students (elementary through college level) may compete for cash and prizes by producing a 60-second public service announcement on any public issue, whether about legendary labor leader César Chávez or not. Entrants should upload the work at their YouTube.com pages and send the URL to <[email protected]> The decisions of the judges will be final.
Winning videos will be presented at the César Chávez celebration. The committee will also produce a SNCAT special program featuring the winners and best runners-up. Students who have a production already uploaded, even if slightly longer than 60-seconds, are invited to enter. Entries are encouraged in either Spanish or English. Those produced in any other language should be submitted with a written translation.
Major sponsors this year include Laborers’ Union Local 169, the Building & Construction Trades Council of Northern Nevada/AFL-CIO and AT&T Nevada.
On March 31, doors of the Circus Circus Mandalay Room will open at 5:30 p.m. with dinner at 7:00 p.m. Reserved tables for 10 are $500.
