As part of Nevada Earthquake Awareness Week, Feb. 21-27, University seismologists, the Nevada State Seismologist, Washoe County’s Emergency Manager, and school staff will participate in a media briefing and drill planned for elementary school students at St. Albert’s School at 10 a.m., Feb. 24, using materials from an online earthquake-drill program found at www.unr.edu/earthquake.
The free earthquake-drill program provided to schools – including an audio recording of the drill and related educational materials – is available online, making the opportunity to practice quake-safe actions available to anyone who wants to prepare to act quickly and correctly when a real earthquake strikes.
In support of this education effort, the Nevada Seismological Laboratory and the University of Nevada, Reno are inviting other Nevada schools to participate by conducting their own school-wide earthquake drill on Feb. 24.
- WHAT: Media briefing and earthquake safety drill
- WHO: University seismologists, the Nevada State Seismologist, Washoe County’s Emergency Manager, and school staff will all participate in a media briefing and drill planned for elementary school students
- WHERE: St. Albert’s the Great Catholic School (see map). Members of the media are suggested to park on St. Albert’s Drive and enter through the school’s main-door entry. The media are invited to video-tape the drill in a third-grade classroom.

The Nevada Earthquake Safety Council is a statewide body representing a partnership of the public and private sectors, with a 22-member board of directors. The Council provides information and ready access for the public through council sponsored programs, the state universities as well as the Nevada Seismological Laboratory and the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology, which are public service departments in the University of Nevada, Reno’s College of Science.
