Opinion: Lowden stands by her man, no matter how often he embarrasses Nevada

SUBMITTED NEWS RELEASE FROM NEVADA STATE DEMOCRATIC PARTY

nevdemparty-300x61-4969855-1769727LAS VEGAS–Jim Gibbons has once again lied to his now ex-wife, to the people of Nevada and possibly under oath.

According to an investigative report aired last night–and against his public statements to the contrary–the governor has been involved in at least one, if not several, long-term affairs over the last 20 years. Less than 24 hours before the State of the State, this governor has once again distracted the state from the serious problems we face with the sordid details of his personal life.

Yet still Sue Lowden, a candidate for U.S. Senate, stands by the man who hand-picked her to be Nevada’s GOP chairwoman. Even after three disastrous years as governor, and as Republicans across the state have distanced themselves from Gibbons, Lowden has refused to abandon her political mentor. Lowden and Gibbons have long been one another’s political supporters. Lowden served on Gibbons’ transition team, supported him while chairwoman of the Nevada GOP and was one of the only people to endorse him for re-election.

So the question remains, why does Lowden continue to ally herself with a governor who has been plagued by personal scandals, committed political gaffe after political gaffe, flip-flopped constantly and now been accused yet again of lying to the public? Is there another shoe to drop?

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee has filed an Open Records Act request to review the visitor logs from the Governor’s Mansion, but Gibbons has refused to release them. KLAS’ George Knapp will air the second segment of the story tonight at 5 p.m. on channel 8.

“This kind of embarrassing news has become commonplace from Gov. Jim Gibbons. Although we deserve better, the people of Nevada have almost come to expect this governor to lie to us,” said Phoebe Sweet, communications director for the Nevada State Democratic Party. “But frankly, he’s reached a new low. To think that he would lie under oath is disturbing to say the least. How can we believe anything this man will say during his very serious speech about the state of our state tonight?

“And it’s also disturbing that Republican party leaders like Sue Lowden would stand up for and even endorse a man like Gibbons, who has not only embarrassed himself and his family, but embarrassed this entire state. This speaks to a lack of judgment on Lowden’s part. But, unfortunately we’ve come to expect that, too.”
