Circle your wagons at the California Trail Center during Cowboy Poetry

ELKO, Nev.— The California Trail Interpretive Center will be open during the Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Elko, Tuesday, Jan. 26. through Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visitors are encouraged to check out the center and see the progress being made of installation to exhibits and dioramas. The 10-foot-tall “I Saw the Elephant” sculpture is on display and visitors will learn what an elephant has to do with the California Trail.

As a special bonus feature Denny Miller who played Duke Shannon on the 1950s “Wagon Train” TV series will be making a personal appearance at the Trail Center both Tuesday and Wednesday.  Episodes of “Wagon Train” will be shown daily at 3 p.m., followed by a discussion of how Hollywood’s version of history might be different than what really happened.

The California Trail Center, operated by the Bureau of Land Management, is located eight miles west of Elko at Hunter Exit 292.  The Trail Center is scheduled to open on a regular basis this summer, and is available to school groups and other organizations on a prearranged basis for meetings or events.   For more information about the California Trail Center call (775) 738-1849 or Park Ranger Gary Koy at (775) 934-2467.
