The Reno Jazz Orchestra – in collaboration with members of the Sierra Nevada Ballet and the Reno Youth Jazz Orchestra – presents a special holiday concert on Saturday, December 19th. The show kicks off at 7:30pm in Nightingale Concert Hall, on the UNR Campus.

The highlight of the evening will be Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn’s deliciously witty and highly original adaptation of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite. Written in 1960, the piece features favorites like the sultry “Sugar Rum Cherry” and the playfully swinging “Peanut Brittle Brigade.”

A special appearance on selected numbers by the Sierra Nevada Ballet is sure to be memorable as they join the Orchestra for a rare choreographed performance of the Duke’s signature sounds. Watch carefully – you might even catch them cascading from the ceiling!

The Orchestra plans other excitement as well, including works by multiple Grammy Award-winning composer Vince Mendoza (a collaborator with the likes of Elvis Costello, the London Symphony Orchestra, and Bjork) and, of course, some holiday fare. “Ellington is always a treat and we’re thrilled to team up with the dancers,” says RJO Music Director Chuck Reider. “It’s going to be a fun show – we’re sure to have some surprises for everyone.”

The Reno Youth Jazz Orchestra – an all-star cast of the regions’ finest high school jazz players – will open the evening’s festivities. Admission is $25 general and $5
students. Tickets are available now at UNR’s Lawlor Events Center ticket office, online at www.tickets.com (search for ‘Reno Jazz Orchestra), by phone at 800.225.2277, or at
the door one hour before showtime. For more information contact Chuck Reider, 775.233.9231.
