Internationally Known Physiatrist Joins Renown Rehabilitation Hospital

Dr.-Marca-AlexanderRenown Health announces Marca Sipski Alexander, M.D. recently joined Renown Rehabilitation Hospital as a physiatrist. Dr. Alexander is internationally known for her work in neurotrauma rehabilitation and for her “sexual function clinical trials,” on which she is often invited to present all over the world. Former patients of Dr. Alexander include Christopher Reeve and Ben Vereen.

As a physiatrist with Renown Rehabilitation Hospital, Dr. Alexander has been charged with developing the Renown Neurotrauma Program within post-acute services. Neurotrauma patients are people who have traditionally had to leave the community for their rehabilitation. Common neurotrauma injuries include spinal cord injuries and traumatic brain injury patients.

In her new role, Dr. Alexander will work directly with trauma surgeons to manage their patients from a physiatry standpoint in an acute setting. With early involvement by Dr. Alexander, patients will be able to receive quality acute rehabilitative care right here at home.

Dr. Alexander was most recently the medical director at Alexander Associates in Hoover, Ala. She serves as the North American vice president of the International Spinal Cord Society. She has also served as the president of the American Spinal Injury Association and was instrumental in the development of the Autonomic Standards for the evaluation of Spinal Cord Injuries along with the organization SCOPE (Spinal Cord Outcome Project Endeavor). Dr. Alexander is also a graduate of the Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine Program and was a member of the National Advisory Board for the National Center for Medical Rehabilitation Research. She is also a member of the Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and American College of Physician Executives.

After receiving her undergraduate degree at Pennsylvania State University, Dr. Alexander attended Jefferson Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Pa. She completed her internship and residency in rehabilitation medicine at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, where she was also the administrative chief resident.

Dr. Alexander is certified by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and a subspecialty certification in SCI Medicine.
