Extended unemployment benefits ready to be paid

CARSON CITY — More than 6,000 Nevadans who have exhausted their unemployment benefits can expect to receive their first payment of the recently passed TIER III extension by this Saturday afternoon, weeks ahead of schedule, Governor Jim Gibbons announced today.
“We are ecstatic that we are going to be able to make this holiday even better for thousands of residents who have been desperately waiting for this additional money,” the Governor said. “The staff at the Department of Employment, Training & Rehabilitation (DETR) has been working overtime since the President signed the bill passing the extension. DETR’s unemployment insurance staff and computer programmers worked tirelessly until 2 am this morning to make these payments happen by this weekend.” Gibbons noted that the computer system at DETR is more than 30 years old and was not designed to handle the 9 different types of unemployment payments presently assisting Nevada families.
The payments for this extension total more than $4 million and are retroactive to the week of November 14th, Gibbons said.
DETR mailed a blue claim card in November to claimants who had exhausted their benefits in order to expedite payments once programming was completed. Those claimants and others who have exhausted all benefits may begin filing their weekly claims on Sunday, Dec. 13, 2009 by phone or on the internet at www.expressclaim.org, said Cynthia Jones, DETR deputy director and administrator for the Employment Security Division.
