Donaldson recognized for work on water quality and weeds

Susan Donaldson, water quality specialist for University of Nevada Cooperative Extension (UNCE), won two national awards from the Association of Natural Recourse Extension Professionals (ANREP) for excellence in an article or newsletter.

Donaldson received two of 23 national awards given this year – winning one of 10 gold awards for her work on water quality and one of six silver awards for her series: Weed Watch.

Both series appeared in Nevada Home – a monthly home- and landscape-improvement magazine.

“We really appreciate the opportunity to partner with Nevada Home to help provide local residents with information they can put to use,” Donaldson said. “These magazine articles help us reach a greater audience of gardeners and landscapers with a message of how to protect water quality and control noxious weeds.”

Donaldson will be formally recognized at the seventh annual Natural Resource Extension Professionals Conference on Sunday, June 27 at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks.

Along with her work in Nevada Home, Donaldson also writes for the Reno Gazette Journal and coordinates Nonpoint Education for Municipal Officials (NEMO) – an educational program that aims to protect water quality through community planning. She also works with cooperative weed-management groups in the Truckee Meadows and Tahoe areas and provides public training in weed management and pesticide safety.

Donaldson also helped orchestrate “Mercury in Fish” – a program highlighting the benefits and risks of eating specific types of fish; “Living on the Land”a multistate curriculum for small-acreage land management; “Weed Warriors” – a breakdown of the most troublesome weeds and how to manage them; and the “Master Gardeners” program, which trains volunteers in research-based, home horticulture practices.

ANREP is a national association for Cooperative Extension service professionals working in environmental education, fisheries, forestry, wood sciences, range, recreation, waste management, water, wildlife and related disciplines.
