Forest Service to clear fuels in Washoe Valley with a helicopter

Date:

SUBMITTED NEWS RELEASE:

Highway 395 travelers entering and leaving Washoe Valley will see a lot of helicopter action from a U.S. Forest Service hazardous fuels project from now through Thanksgiving.

The Carson Ranger District of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest is completing a 200-acre hazardous fuels reduction project on steep and inaccessible slopes adjacent to private properties. This project will help prevent catastrophic wildfire, provide defensible space for nearby property homeowners, and improve overall forest health.

This project is in the wildland urban interface, or “where the homes meet the Forest,” and is among one of the largest blocks of unburned forested land remaining in the scenic Sierra Front. Fourteen large timber stand-replacing fires have burned around 125,000 acres in the past 30 years in this area.
