Capitol flag to fly at half-staff to honor police officer

GOVERNOR’S OFFICE NEWS RELEASE:

CARSON CITY — Governor Jim Gibbons has ordered the flag atop the Capitol in Carson City and the flag in front of the Grant Sawyer Building in Las Vegas to be flown at half-staff on Wednesday October 14, 2009 to honor Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Officer Milburn “Millie” Beitel. Officer Beitel was killed when his patrol car crashed. Investigators are still working to determine what caused the accident.

30-year-old Beitel attended high school in Las Vegas. He joined the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department after serving in the United States Marines.

“I want to extend my deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Officer Beitel,” Governor Jim Gibbons said, “His sacrifice in the line of duty is a reminder to us all that the men and women in law enforcement in Nevada deserve our thanks and gratitude.”
