Reed High School Student Dies from Injuries Sustained in Front of School

Date:

A 17-year-old Reed High School junior who was struck crossing the street outside campus after dark last week has died.

According to the Sparks Police Department, officers were dispatched at 8:21 p.m. Oct. 18 to the area outside Reed, 1350 Baring Boulevard. Police said an investigation showed Maelynn McLauchlin was crossing the street on foot in front of the school when she was struck by an eastbound vehicle.

McLauchlin was transported to a nearby hospital with serious injuries, police said. She passed away Friday.

The vehicle’s driver, a 17-year-old male, remained on scene and has been cooperating with the investigation, police said. Speed, alcohol and drugs do not appear to be a factor in the collision.

A makeshift memorial was set up outside the school over the weekend. Reed students and staff have also began petitioning the city for caution lights at the crosswalk that goes from the school to the Baring Village shopping center.
