Date:

tmcc-logo-1pms-block-150-6388501-2409923Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC) and the Nevada Museum of Art (Museum) have joined together to host the Mixed Blessings Symposium. The symposium, inspired by Lucy R. Lippard’s book, “Mixed Blessings, New Art in Multicultural America,” examines the cross-cultural process taking place in the work of contemporary Latino, Native, African and Asian-American artists.  The symposium will be held Nov. 8-10 with a special opening program and artist reception from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 8 at the Museum.  Symposium tickets are $15 for general admission and $10 for members/students and include free admission to the artist reception and TMCC’s Distinguished Speakers Series.

Presented in collaboration with the Museum’s exhibition The Way We Live: Contemporary American Indian Art of the Great Basin & Sierra Nevada, the Mixed Blessings Symposium will feature presentations and creative projects inspired by American artists of mixed ethnic identities. These projects explore the complex relationship individuals have with their cultures and its changing role in society. The symposium will embrace many of the issues addressed in Lippard’s book, such as uncertainty of exile, the confusion of identity in attempts to separate from the ‘melting pot ‘ and reversing stereotypes to reclaim history and memory. Presentations and creative projects will be featured at TMCC and the Museum.
