Friends of Nevada Wilderness and Forest Service offer a week of volunteer fun in Central Nevada

Date:

USFS NEWS RELEASE:

SPARKS — Friends of Nevada Wilderness and the Austin Ranger District of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest invite you to a week-long Wilderness monitoring trek through the Toiyabe Crest National Recreation Trail from October 5 to 11, 2009. This moderately strenuous backpacking trip will require physically fit volunteers. The daily hikes, however, will not be very long—averaging 9.6 miles a day for 7 days.

“During July and August, Friends’ volunteers and the Nevada Conservation Corps cleared thick vegetation out from over 20 miles of the trail, installed 9 kiosks at the trailheads, and placed 20 directional posts to help hikers access and pinpoint this remote and spectacular area,” said Wes Hoskins, Friends of Nevada Wilderness Forest Project Coordinator. “The upcoming October trip will showcase all our hard work on this expansive gem of the Toiyabe mountain range, which is the longest range in the state,” added Hoskins.

“Friends of Nevada Wilderness continue to provide much needed support and maintenance of these special areas,” said Steve Williams, Austin and Tonopah District Ranger. “Most of the public probably doesn’t realize the huge amount of work that Friends’ accomplishes towards improving and enhancing their Wilderness experiences,” said Williams.

A shuttle will be needed between the Kingston and South Twin Trailheads; carpooling and transportation can be arranged. Learn more about this release by calling Wes Hoskins from Friends of Nevada Wilderness at 775-324-7667 or by visiting their website at www.nevadawilderness.org, or by calling Forest Public Affairs Officer Christie Kalkowski at 775-355-5311.
