Fire Hurts. Red Cross Helps. raises funds for immediate client financial assistance that helps families to secure a safe place to stay, food, and clothing.
“Home fires destroy our belongings, of course and they undermine personal well-being when families are vulnerable to death and injury,” said Zanny Marsh, Executive Director of the American Red Cross of Northern Nevada. “Red Cross volunteers respond 24-hours a day, seven days a week, with comfort and hope to help our neighbors begin a journey from recovery to resilience.”
In the days following a fire, trained Red Cross caseworkers work with families to identify additional resources to build a recovery plan and connect with spiritual care and psychological first aid.
And, because the Red Cross cannot prevent home fires, the campaign also includes free smoke alarm installation in the most fire-affected neighborhoods. Red Cross volunteers meet with residents to customize evacuation routes and share fire prevention and preparedness tips.
On average, Red Cross volunteers respond to a home fire in Northern Nevada every 2.3 days, with an increase in multi-unit fires that routinely displace between 10 and 30 families at a time.
