Erika Harrsch: The Monarch Paradigm – Migration as Metaphor

Inspired by the annual North American migration of Monarch butterflies, this Mexican-born artist creates an installation using thousands of printed paper butterflies, conveying a reminder of the fragility of life and the power of nature.

Smudge Studio
April 11 – July 26
In fall 2012, smudge studio (Elizabeth Ellsworth and Jamie Kruse) spent twelve days driving the routes along which nuclear waste is moved in the American West from sites of waste generation to disposal stations. This research-based art project includes extensive photography and performance-based art by Ellsworth and Kruse along the journey.

After Goya: Tamara Kostianovsky

Responding to the tradition of still-life painting, Kostianovsky creates a three-dimensional sculptural representation of the butcher shop depicted in Francisco de Goya’s 1808 painting Bodegón con costillas y cabeza de cordero. The sculpture, made of recycled clothing, creates a dialogue about issues related to food, bounty, and excess.

The 1° Project: Larry Mitchell
through July 26
For more than twenty years Australian painter Larry Mitchell has sailed to and painted the effects of globalization and climate change on the islands in the Indian Ocean. He calls this collection of work the 1ºC Project, referring to the one-degree centigrade increase in ocean temperatures that is causing so many of the changes Mitchell is witnessing.
