Guard to Remove Abandoned Vehicles from Steamboat Ditch, Hunter Creek Areas

Carson-River-Cleanup-by-Natl-GuardThe Nevada Army National Guard’s 1-189th General Support Aviation Battalion will be removing abandoned vehicles near Reno using helicopters on Saturday, May 2, 2015.

The clean-up effort is in cooperation with the Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful, the Boy Scouts of America and the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office.

Abandoned vehicles will be removed from Steamboat Ditch and Hunter Creek areas at 10 am.

The Army Guard will use two CH-47 Chinook Helicopters. Crews will attach cables to the vehicles and move them to where officials will dispose of hazardous wastes and prepare the vehicles for tow-truck transportation.

The removal of the vehicles is expected to help local habitats and wildlife.

The removal of the vehicles was coordinated by Jacob Waters for his Boy Scouts’ Eagle Scout and Hornaday Medal projects.
