Numerous NAK alumni are leading the organization of this event and emphasize the importance of self-development and personal responsibility.
“As young men, we understand that many issues relating to alcohol abuse and sexual harassment start with us – and we want to be proactive in openly discussing them amongst each other and educating ourselves via public officials in the community,” said Juan López, president of the local NAK Alumni Association. “It’s our duty to educate ourselves on our roles as men within these issues and actively work to become better people.”
This workshop is part of a national movement to educate all NAK brothers in these issues. Each NAK region along the west coast will host a workshop similar to this in the coming weeks, to reach all 26 existing NAK chapters.
Jo Harvey, program specialist for student conduct at UNR, will be a guest presenter at this conference. Jo’s primary role is to develop and implement drug and alcohol prevention programs on campus. In addition, she has taught an “Overview of Addiction” course for the past several years for the Center for the Application of Substance Abuse Technologies.
“It’s tremendous that these young men are taking the steps to proactively educate themselves on these issues and realize that a lot of the times, situations like these come down to the simple decisions they make,” said Harvey, who was also a speaker at a TEDx event at UNR in January 2015.
“These issues are incredibly important and we owe it to society, to women, to our communities and to ourselves to take personal responsibility & be proactive in addressing them,” said Ricardo Salazar, member of the local NAK Alumni Association and Program Coordinator at the Center For Student Cultural Diversity.
